Yesterday I lunched with 3 gentlemen launching a new business.

They wanted a website.

Rarely do I do any web-design. Usually just for friends. Or if the price is right.

What they wanted was super simple. Just a four page website. A little SEO. An autoresponder. A blog.

“How much?”

“$1000.00″ I said (and the only reason it was that low was because a friend was involved).

The gentleman’s look let me know this was the last I’d hear from him.

I was glad. There’s no way it would be worth it. Even for the 2 hours it might have taken to complete the project. SEO and everything.

Why?

Because of a general rule we ALWAYS need to remember “A cheap person is a pain in the butt.”

This guy had just mentioned the he dropped $100 at dinner the night before. And he wouldn’t spend 10x that for a website to grow his business?

On the other hand, another business owner called me. Asked about a site redesign. I quoted $3K for same day or $1000 and I would get to it within a month. He said OK to the $3K and emailed the content for the site. The entire project took a little more than an hour. He was thrilled.

1. Don’t be afraid to turn away business. Know the value you provide and stay true.

2. It’s better to lose bad business than to gain bad business. Don’t waste time trying to figure out how you could have gotten the sale. Move on.

3. Once you find someone who understands and appreciates value ask if they have any identical friends.

First, it’s taken as a compliment. Second, you will get a “filtered” referral list.

Although this post is primarily written to those who have engaged http://www.offlineinternetprofits.com/, the same thoughts are applicable to online business.

Even if you’re desparate to make money be patient. Shoot for great clients, not just any clients.
